Why Young Christians Are Leaving the Church and Rethinking Faith

Approximately 60% of young adults leave active involvement in church as they exit their teen years. Some never return, while others live indefinitely at the margins of the faith community, attempting to define their own spirituality. Some return to robust engagement with the established church, while a few remain faithful through the transition from adolescence to adulthood and beyond. Why are our young people dropping out of church? And what can we do about it?

In the best-selling book “You Lost Me”, David Kinnaman explores the reasons young Christians (age 18-29) are leaving the church and rethinking their commitment to the faith. Based on new research conducted by the Barna Group, Kinnaman’s book takes an honest look at the profound cultural changes that contribute to the dropout rate among the Mosaic generation. In this class, we will use some of the material from Kinnaman’s book as a platform to discuss how our young people are approaching and thinking about their faith today.

Faith and Culture - How Shall We Then Live?

Is America now a post Christian culture? If our society is only secular and no longer religious, how shall we then live? This course looks at the trends of declining Biblical morality in our country and the rise of Humanism as evidenced by cultural indicators.  Is Man’s intellect and wisdom alone working to solve our society’s problems, or can it? We will trace the paths of Humanism that have confronted Christianity through history from the beginning of the church to our world today. What are people really believing and why? These attacks on our faith and our response to these vain philosophies will be introduced each week with a video presentation from the series, “How Shall We then Live?” and then discussed in class so that you will be equipped to give an answer for the hope that is in you.  This is a continuation of the faith and reason study that began this year with faith and science and now investigates faith and culture.

And not just well-known stories; we’ll probably dig up some you’ve never heard before.  After all, why should little kids have all the fun? We’ll learn a lot, and have a good time in the process. Come and see!”

Seekers

WELCOME TO THE SEEKERS CLASS!  Mayfair’s Seekers is a close group of active, growing families working together through Bible study, fellowship and prayer.  Our class began nearly 11 years ago as a small young married group.  We began building families, some couples earlier than others.  With the addition of other Mayfair members and an influx of new Christians, our membership now consists of a varied age group of active families.  While a majority of our membership has children ranging from infants to young adolescents, many families without children have also found our class to be the perfect fit through which to continue, or even begin, their walk with God.

The Seekers Offer:
- Discussion Oriented Bible Study
- Frequent fellowship
- Geographically based care groups
- Support and encouragement of fellow Christians
- A home base for service and growth with the Mayfair family

Although our membership consists of people with varying interests, professions and needs, the tie that binds us together is a strong sense of purpose and a desire to seek God’s plan for our lives, our families and our Church congregation.  We welcome you to our class and encourage you to study with us as we seek together the righteousness of the Lord Jesus Christ.

“Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33

We maintain ministries of prayer for class members and their friends and families, cards of encouragement and visitation.

Lifesavers are mission-minded.  we provide financial, spiritual and actual physical labor to a variety of mission efforts.  Lifesavers provide support for a full time mission family in San Quintin, Mexico on the Baja peninsula, as well as contributing to many other mission efforts.

Christian fellowship occurs every class session.  We also have other get-togethers throughout the year.  In helping to support visitor luncheons, we have yet another opportunity to be together.

Serving others is a major focus of the Lifesavers class and we are always ready to meet spiritual, physical and emotional needs.

Galations 5:13 “...rather, serve one another in love.”

Conquerors

Life has often been compared to a roller coaster.  While some days are filled with joy, we continue to brace ourselves for events which can take our spiritual breath away.  The CONQUERORS CLASS presents practical day-to-day applications of Christian principles which remind us, regardless of life’s circumstances, that we are winners through Him who loves us (our name and focus come straight from Romans 8:37).  We meet in the Worship Center which makes this class a convenient place for guests to become acquainted with the Mayfair church.  Regardless of your age or life station, you will find a place to belong in our Bible Class.

Classics

The Classics class is the largest class at Mayfair. All ages are welcome.  We would love to have you join us.  We are a class where in-depth Bible Study along with practical application is a main focus of the class time.  This is done by a presentation that includes much latitude for open discussion and then a look at the Word for the final answer.  This class endeavors to get to know and care about each person and their needs. The Classics class is made up of a variety of members who strive to serve.  We have members who support both financially and physically many mission efforts both at home and abroad.  We have a weekly newsletter that provides a prayer list for our class and friends of our class (who are not members at Mayfair).  We are also providing a pictorial directory of class members.  Fellowships are greatly enjoyed by our class as a way of getting to know one another better. Care is provided in any way possible for those who need assistance—spiritually or physically.  We welcome all ages and, as many of us are over forty, we welcome younger members as we feel that we have much experience to offer them—and that they have, in turn, wonderful enthusiastic visions to offer us.

Builders

The Builders class is open to all.  Over time, it has become primarily a class of single ladies although some men do attend.

The class attempts to go beyond a superficial view of the Bible text and look for lessons that may be overlooked in the course of study.  By bringing these additional truths into our lives, we can become better Christians.  The class also strives to model faithful Christian living to younger Christians.

Bridge Builders

Jesus was a bridge builder in every way.  He built a bridge between Jew and Gentile, between the rich and the poor, and He built the ultimate bridge between us and God through the cross.  When everyone around Him wanted to build a barrier and a wall, He chose to build a bridge.  We need more people like Jesus in a world that is filled with judges and critics.

The aim of Bridge Builders is to strive to be like Jesus through Bible study, prayer and ministry.  Bridge Builders seek not to just know about God, but to know God. This class also helps to support a missionary in Cuba and the church at San Quintin, Baja, Mexico.
