MCM Summer Intern Ministry

MAYFAIR CHURCH OF CHRIST
Children’s Ministry Intern Program

The Mayfair Children’s Ministry is a valuable ministry within the Mayfair Church Family, ministering to over 300 children from preschool to 5th grade.  We are able to impact the lives of young people at the most impressionable period of their life.  Building blocks for faith development now and for the future are put in place.  To supplement the work of our Children’s Ministry and to allow training for possible future Children’s Ministers and volunteer Children’s Ministry Workers we are offering a summer intern program.

Some of the specifics are:

Children’s Ministry Interns will work under the Mayfair Eldership, the Children’s Ministry Deacons and, specifically with Randy Fowler, Children’s Minister and Roni Armstrong, Children’s Ministry Administrative Assistant.

Children’s Ministry Interns will be responsible for planning and carrying out certain specific responsibilities. The positions are based on a 40 hour work week (schedule to be determined by the Children’s Ministry Leadership), and the interns will be expected to participate in Vacation Bible School, Bible Camp, Service Projects, Outreach Efforts, and other programs.  Children’s Ministry Interns will be involved in the Children’s Sunday & Wednesday Bible School Programs.  There is also the expectation that a portion of the intern’s weekly time will be spent with our children and their families in developing and strengthening relationships.

We are seeking to fill 3 - 4 Internships in Mayfair Children’s Ministry.  Positions will be for approximately 8 - 10 weeks beginning mid May (will adapt to college student’s school schedule) and going through the end of July.  All positions are based on a 40 hour work week.  Responsibilities to include ministering to children age Toddler – 5th Grade and their families.  Salary for the internship will be paid based on 40 hours per week beginning at minimum wage (salary will be adjusted based upon experience and other factors).  Housing would be provided if needed in one of our Mayfair member’s homes.

For the Summer Of 2009, the initial deadline being set for submitting an application is January 15.  Applications will be reviewed by our Children’s Ministry Staff, Deacons, and Elders before a final decision is made.  College age is preferred but we will consider all applications.  Those interested should complete the application on the reverse side and return to Randy Fowler in the Children’s Ministry Office (or e mail to ) before the January 15 deadline.

Upward Basketball 2009 Application
+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +

Every year in December excitement begins to build as another season of Upward Basketball at Mayfair gets ready to tip off. The excitement comes from the fact that Mayfair has an opportunity to touch the lives of hundreds of children and family members with what has become one of our largest local outreach ministries. But the reason Upward qualifies as an outreach is not just the fact it brings in families from our community. At the halftime of every game, basketball play is stopped and a devotional message is presented and closed in prayer. Our guests, from the moment they walk into our building, are exposed to Mayfair volunteers, some of whom are coaching their children, others refereeing the games, and Mayfair youth serving in concessions.

brief description

During every practice (Monday, Tuesday, & Thursday nights) coaches stop practice and hold a devotional with their players. A memory verse is assigned for each weekly practice for children to recite. When our season closes out in late February, an Awards Night Ceremony is held in our Worship Center with hundreds of people from our community present. Our Upward ministry allows us to take something that everyone is familiar with, namely basketball, and use it as a ministry outreach tool to families.

Babies and Toddlers

brief description

You don’t have to read “Mayfair Loves Kids” signage in the hallway of the baby/toddler area to realize you’re entering a place where infants (ages 6 months - 2 years old) are truly treasured!

We believe we are building a foundation for life long faith development as we take your precious little ones into our Bible classes on Sunday and Wednesday.

A Children’s Information Desk at the entrance to the Baby/Toddler area will be manned by friendly volunteers who with the help of a computerized check in/check out system will direct you to the location of your child’s classroom.

Caring and trained adults welcome your child into a clean and inviting environment that is set up for experiencing with all the senses the presence of God and His love for them.

Children’s Worship

"Yes, Jesus replied. Haven’t you ever read the Scriptures? For they say, ‘You have taught children and infants to give you praise.’ “ Matthew 21:16

Mayfair feels there needs to be a safe place for children where they can experience worship in a setting where they sing songs, watch puppets and/or video, and hear a lesson that is targeted for their age level. Celebration Station is our Sunday morning children’s church program for Preschool 2’s, 4’s (Ages 2 - 5 year olds) and Elementary K - 2nd Grade. Children join their families for the beginning of worship in our worship center but are directed at the appropriate time to gathering rooms on our first (Preschool) and second (Elementary) floors of the Children’s Ministry Wing. Safe and quick check in for Celebration Station is available at the entrance to both areas at our two Children’s Information Desks.

brief descriptionOn Sunday nights during worship, Kids Praise is in high gear! Kids Praise is a high energy time for preschool (Ages 2-5) and elementary (Grades 1 - 5 plus a special Kindergarten class!) children. Guest families come directly to the designated Kids Praise rooms on our first and second floor gathering room areas and check in and out their children. Learning centers, video, small group break out time, puppets, and of course singing or praise time offered to God are just some of the components that make Kids Praise a big reason kids want to return every Sunday night. Our Children’s Chorus (Grades 3 - 5) kicks into session during the Fall/Winter months as a special feature during Kids Praise.

Elementary

brief description

As you and your children enter our elementary area on the second floor hallway of our Children’s Ministry Wing, a colorful visual Bible timeline takes them from the creation story to the resurrection. You realize they are in for an exciting time during Bible class by the smiles on their faces! We’ll take them on a journey through stories which show the hand of God on events throughout history. They’ll encounter exciting and challenging stories from the timeless stories of God’s word. They’ll explore what it means to follow God and learn about their special family of God.

Visiting families check in at our Children’s Information Desk (K - 2nd Graders are dropped off and picked up by parents or legal guardians only) at the entrance to the Elementary area. Our volunteers will direct you to your child’s Bible classroom on Sundays and Wednesdays. Through the use of creative teaching methods presented by adults who love the Lord and love kids, your child will take additional steps toward a lasting relationship with their God.

A variety of supplemental programs are ongoing in our elementary ministry, including Prayer Warriors (a praying ministry for grades 3 - 5), Bible Memory Challenge (a Bible memorization program for grades K - 6), Leadership Training (Leadership development for grades 4 & 5), and a year round schedule of activities which challenge children to think more deeply about their walk with God. VBS, summer camps and retreats, and a bunch of other fun activities become their new foundation as we begin their “great adventure” that will last a lifetime!

Preschool

Our Preschool Area is for children ages 2 to 5 (as of September 1 of the school calendar year).  As children enter the “Discovery” first floor hallway of our Children’s Ministry wing they will DISCOVER that God is, God loves them, and He desires us to love and serve Him.  Visiting families check in at our Children’s Information Desk at the entrance to the Preschool area and our volunteers will direct you to your child’s Bible classroom for Sunday and/or Wednesday.

With our check in/check out system you realize your child is entering a fun but safe place for him or her to learn about God.  We offer many ways for preschoolers to “Grow With God” including Bible classes with caring and loving teachers, Sunday Morning Children"s Church, Celebration Station and Sunday Night Kid’s Praise in our “jungle themed atrium”, and various preschool activities throughout the year.  We use a variety of ways to teach preschoolers the Bible through hands on activities, puppet shows, multimedia, Bible centered lessons, and more. We would love for you and your family to come see what Preschool at Mayfair is all about! - Leigh Ann Benson, Preschool Specialist

Nursery

A special area awaits your little ones (Age 0 - 24 months) during worship times on Sunday morning and Sunday night.

Mayfair offers 3 nursery areas manned by trained volunteers:
Creepers & Crawlers: Age 0 - 12 months
Movers & Shakers: Age 12 - 18 months
Movers & Shakers: 18 - 24 months

These nurseries are open 10 minutes prior to our Sunday AM & PM worship services and remain open until after worship ends.

Workers are clearly identified with their cute smocks & booties and will greet you at each nursery door. A security sign in/sign out system (complete with tags for baby and baby bag and pagers) is in place to assure you that your baby will be well taken care of during the worship hour. Our nursery areas continue to grow as God continues to bless us with new additions!  I’ll be looking for you this Sunday! - , Nursery Coordinator

These word documents list the workers scheduled to help with the babies and toddlers. Contact with any questions about these schedules.

MISSION STATEMENT

MCDC provides a safe and healthy Christian environment that promotes the physical, social, cognitive and spiritual development of young children.

PRE-SCHOOL

MCDC offers classes for children 12 to 36 months old. Children in the 3-year-old class must be potty-trained. Age for each class is calculated by the child’s age as of September 1.

PRE-KINDERGARTEN (4 Year Olds)

To enter Pre-Kindergarten, a child must be 4 years old by September 1 of that school year.

KINDERGARTEN

To enter Kindergarten, a child must be 5 years old by September 1 of that school year.

DAY CARE

Students in the above classes may stay from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., or part of that time, in a supervised daycare program. Should there be other openings in the afternoon session, parents have the opportunity to reserve spaces for the children by contacting the staff one day in advance.

CURRICULUM

The 12-month to 2 year-old classes use thematic units for instruction. Beginning with the 2 year-olds, teachers use the Abeka curriculum. Abeka is a Christian- and phonic-based curriculum that gives children a solid foundation for beginning reading and writing. Children also engage in other educational activities, such as practicing with numbers.

Children’s Chorus

brief description

If your children love music then the Mayfair Children’s Chorus is the place to be!  Every year in the Fall (Late September - Early December) any 3rd - 5th grader can participate in our Children’s Chorus.  The group meets on Sunday nights from 5 - 6 PM and prepares a selection of praise songs.  The group performs for area nursing/retirement homes and is available for other possibilities.

The goals for the chorus include instilling in our young people a love for God though music and to serve others with music, reaching out across generations and cultures.  For more information on the Children’s Chorus .

Fun and Games

Who says nothing is free anymore?  Mayfair Children’s Ministry is providing you FREE access to Bible Champions, a PC Action Adventure Video Game for K - 6th grade children. The games are produced by a local company “3rd Day Games” and with the access code you will have a new game available to play each month.

You can go to this site: Bible Champions. Your access code is K5P-H9N-B5E. This will allow you to download the games to your pc computer (Sorry: will not work with Mac computers) at home. Although not affiliated with the churches of Christ, the producers of the games appear to be making some basic Bible stories come alive to children through the use of video.

I would like to get your feedback (positive or negative) regarding your use of the games at home. We will decide at the end of the year to continue this FREE service. For right now, enjoy playing games that take you into the Scriptures!

Kids Praise

Mayfair offers a Sunday night program entitled Kids Praise with three separate activity tracks running each week.

One of those tracks is Preschool Kids Praise which provides a worship time followed by learning center (ex - crafts, puppets, etc.) teaching on basic Bible stories.  Preschool Kids Praise is located on the first floor preschool hallway.

The 2 remaining tracks involve our elementary age children and both are located on our second floor Elementary hallway. A special Kindergarten class, with an age appropriate curriculum bridges the gap between preschool and elementary.  1st - 5th Graders meet for a period of singing, drama, small groups, & a video driven Bible series.

Parents can support Kids Praise through…

Your Children’s Attendance - Whether you’re meeting for Life Groups and/or participating in our 5 PM worship, Kids Praise is a special experience provided just for your children(& their friends!) on Sunday nights at 5.

Your Volunteer Support - Preschool Kids Praise requires parental support on a rotation schedule with our other two offerings needing parent volunteers from time to time.

Pick Up/Drop Off By Parents - Every child through 2nd grade needs to be picked up by his/her parent to help us in providing a safe & fun place for children to assemble.

Contact the Children’s Ministry Office at 881-4651 or for additional information.

Prayer Warriors

brief description
We are extremely excited about the 2006/2007 Prayer Warriors Ministry.  Your child is now an official Mayfair “Prayer Warrior” and will be embarking on a year-long journey that we hope will help teach them the power of prayer.

This 3rd-5th grade ministry was started by Gary Bradley in 1996 in conjunction with the Abundant Living Television Program.  Oftentimes, viewers would call or write the show requesting prayers.  Brother Bradley’s idea to use our elementary children to pray on their behalf evolved into the Prayer Warriors Ministry of today. Since its inception, the ministry has used each 3rd - 5th grade class (on a monthly rotating basis) to write cards that are sent to Abundant Living viewers, the sick of our own congregation, United States soldiers, and others who need our encouragement.

The ultimate goal of the ministry, however, is to teach our children the awesome power of prayer. This is where you come in.  We will be working harder than ever this year to teach your child how to pray and how to look for God’s answers to our prayers.  We will work to accomplish this through scripture and practical application of prayer in and out of the classroom.  The catch, however, is this prayer must be emphasized at home.  You may have heard the old adage that “families who pray together stay together”. This has never been more true than in today’s world.

brief description
We will be working to provide you with practical tips throughout the year to encourage prayer time with your children.  During the course of the year, we may even ask you to join us during the Bible class hour to pray with your children.

If you have any questions, feedback, or concerns, I encourage you to contact me so that we can make this ministry what it is intended to be an avenue to open up the lines of communication between your children and their Creator.

Children’s Ministry: A Place To Call Their Own

brief description

We believe that children are our greatest treasure from God, and at Mayfair it shows! Your children have a special place here to call their own. Our children’s ministry provides a safe and fun place for children (birth - 5th grade) to discover and explore Bible truths.  It is here that your child will learn to love God and develop a young life that shines.

No matter what their age or development stage, we’re here to complement the hard work that you as parents are pouring in to your children. We believe a partnership with parents is God’s way to raise great kids!

On Sundays & Wednesday nights God’s Word comes alive through creative worship and Bible class times.  An exciting year round calendar of activities provides children a variety of opportunities to develop lasting friendships and grow in their walk with God. Our teachers and volunteers take great joy in serving your family.

Discovery Kids

When you and your child arrive on our campus, colorful signage directs you to special parking for our guest families with children. Follow the children’s footprints into our “Discovery Zone” where you’ll be greeted by one of our Children’s Ministry volunteers and directed to our Children’s Information Desk. Friendly adults will answer any of your questions and quickly check your children in with the help of a computerized system. Our safe and secure facilities are designed to give every child a wonderful experience - and every parent’s peace of mind that their child is being cared for by loving hands, and taught with loving hearts.

We can’t wait to meet you and your children!
- Randy Fowler, Children’s Minister
