Mitchells Plains, South Africa
Current Needs:
- Start a Christian School
- Expand to Surrounding Villages
- Expand Urban Work in Capetown
HISTORY
Mervyn served in the Merchant Navy where he worked as a purser for twenty years and traveled all over the world. He then left the boats to follow Jesus. Mervyn and his wife Elizabeth became Christians in 1976, then served with Athlone Church of Christ until 1986. They have two grown daughters: Candice who has a 9-year-old girl, and Micheline, both working in Cape Town.
The Pasqualle’s and another family took a big step of faith to start a work in Mitchell’s Plain, Cape Town, an impoverished area with a population of about 1 million people.
In 1986 their new congregation began in a school classroom, with 15-20 people worshipping in a classroom. Three years later, in 1989 the young church moved into a brand new building, thanks to help from Mayfair and other US congregations.
TODAY
Over 20 years later, the congregation comprises over 200 Christians. They installed three elders in 2006 and have two preachers. They have AM and PM services; a Wednesday evening Bible study; weekly ladies’ classes; weekend youth meetings; a pre-school program with 120 children; leadership classes; and various outreach programs.
